Recovery and Rehabilitation

recovery and rehabilitation

Your recovery following surgery is dependant on the operation you have had. Many procedures now-a-days can be safely performed in a day case setting with no overnight stay. On rare occasions, when there has been a delay or you have felt unwell after the procedure, an overnight stay may be needed and you should be aware of this possibility. In any event if you have animals or any dependants you care for contingency plans will be required.

Anaesthetic care and pain relief are carefully managed to ensure you have a smooth recovery with minimal side effects. None-the-less it is normal to feel quite tired for a day or two and it is wise to allow for this.

Procedures such as knee replacement will require a stay in hospital until you are able to move around safely on your own. To avoid complications to your recovery you will be helped to mobilise as soon as possible with help from the physiotherapy team.

Specific instructions for your recovery and rehabilitation time and schedule will be given according to the procedure you have had. A general outline of what to expect will be discussed prior to surgery so that you can make the necessary arrangements.

As you begin to recover and begin to feel less pain it can be tempting to do more than you have been advised to do. It is very important that you follow the exact recovery schedule that Mr Mandalia and his team have prescribed for you. In orthopaedic operations physiotherapy is a key part of you treatment. It is important to continue to follow the plan you have been given in order for you to have the best chance of a good recovery.

A follow up appointment will be made for you following you operation, this is typically 6 weeks after the date of your procedure.
